“Where’s My Toucan?” and Vintage-Inspired Swimsuits

I’ve been on this medicine that makes me extremely drowsy so I’ve been in bed a majority of the day today. The good news? The medicine has seemed to help. I don’t feel quite ready yet to write about this whole debacle, but I promise I’ll give an update this week.

I’m really hoping to run on Thursday, so I’m trying to stay optimistic. Helping me stay positive?

1) I got to go see the brand spanking new apartment I will be moving into this week! They just finished the construction and it is amazing. It is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath place (with one of the bedrooms lofted), with huge windows, granite in the kitchen, basically all the fixings 🙂 It is on the very top floor with the most amazing views of the mountains. Quintessential Charlottesville. Can’t wait to show you some pics when I move in.

2) Thoughts of fall fashion on the horizon and some fun swimsuits to close out the summer with. I have a fun bachelorette party coming up over Labor Day weekend at the beach and have been looking forward to wearing a new swimsuit. It’s something I rarely wear outside of lap swimming and/or triathlons: a one-piece. I know what you’re thinking, “how marmish!”  (is that even how you would spell that? LOL) or “you’re too young to resort to the one-pieces”…but this is a super cute 1950s/pin-upesque suit I scored on Gilt a few weeks back.

Let me set the scene

My new suit is the “Where’s My Toucan” belted one-piece from Marc by Marc Jacobs.

It is a really big step for me to post a pic of my body in a swimsuit and, like any woman, I am critical of certain spots….mostly my thighs/legs…but as I’ve gotten older I’ve really come to terms with my body and feel grateful for how strong my legs are and how they allow me to do what I love: run. With the suit I wore my favorite cat eyed sunglasses this summer, which I got on Bluefly 🙂

Suit: Marc by Marc Jacobs Where’s My Toucan belted one-piece c/o Gilt; Sunglasses: Prada Black Acrylic Cate Eye c/o Bluefly

How cute is this print?

I’ve had my eye on this suit since the beginning of the summer, but just didn’t feel like shelling out $180 for a suit. But when I saw that it was half off on Gilt, I went for it. Yep, I bought a swimsuit without ever trying it on, a major risk. But somehow I could tell that the back would give good coverage and a medium would fit me (I hate when swimsuit bottoms are too small on the bum…I have some junk in the trunk so I need coverage thank you m’aam). Lo and behold when it showed up in the mail and I tried it on (after I squealed like a little kid in a candy store while opening up the box ;-)) it fit perfectly! It was almost too perfect. In fact, I’ve never had a suit that fit as good. Maybe there is something to spending more on swimsuits. Just like more expensive clothes, they’re more likely to fit and last longer.

Right now the same suit is on sale at Saks (smalls and extra smalls left) for just about the same price as I got it on Gilt. If you’re looking for a fun, chic swimsuit that offers good coverage and fits like a dream, this is a great deal! If you are tall like me–5’8” and over–you’ll probably need a medium, but if you’re shorter than me with a smallish bust size (A or B), those sizes would most likely fit you! If your bust size is bigger than a B cup, I wouldn’t recommend the suit….but, I’d also say that you should flaunt it in a halter bikini or something! 🙂

Here are some more options for fun, vintage looking one-piece swimwear:

Marcy by Marc Jacobs makes the same printed suit in a bikini, with a belted high-waisted bottom. I seriously love these…they’d look so chic at a beach or pool party! (Ruffled Top On Sale for $63 from Neiman Marcus; Matching high-waisted bottom On Sale for $49 from Syfto)

Spanx Ruched Lace-Trim One-Piece. Have you ever tried on a Spanx swimsuit? I don’t necessarily need the support to visually trim my midsection, but a year ago I tried on a one-shoulder Spanx suit and it fit like a dream. I didn’t buy it and regret it to this day. This suit is super cute! (Spanx Ruched Lace-Trim One-Piece On Sale for $133 from Neiman Marcus)

For a mix of higher end and  more affordable vintage-style one-piece suits, Modcloth is the place to go. Here are some of my favorites from the site:

Bettie Page Beach Honeycomber One Piece (On Sale for $62.99). Oh my goodness gracious, this suit is so cute! It’d look great with a fun headband or head scarf.

Esther Williams Bathing Beauty One Piece in Cherry Pie ($89.99). All American Adorbs!

Bathing Beauty One Piece in Daisy (On Sale for $62.99). This is so darling and would look chic with a sunhat and some big glasses

Choose Your Seaside Two Piece (On Sale for $115.99).

Some Of My Favorites To Complete The Look

From top left clockwise:

Robin Piccone Tie Dye Cover-Up (Nordstrom On Sale $72.90)
Kate Spade New York Angelique Sunglasses (Dillards $128)
Diane Von Furstenberg Halo Bud Green “Carsandra” Beach Coverup (Bluefly $238)

  1. You look freaking adorable. I have never seen those types of suits before. So cute!

  2. Love them all! I am digging the vintage look. I have been seeing a bunch of those suits on pinterest! Maybe I will bite the bullet and get one.

Wow, I loved that Spanx one so much I actually clicked on the link to buy it — very first time I’ve ever done that based on a blog post! — and it’s only available in size 14. I guess that’s the downside to the reduced price… Darn!

Can’t wait to hear about your new digs. I lived near the Corner (on Virginia Ave.) for a year, then out south of 64 off Avon, if you know where that is — amazing view from our place there.

    • Oh noooo! I hate that! I’m didn’t see that there was only that size left. I tried to search for it elsewhere but couldn’t find it 😦

Actually we are moving to a new building (it’s a small apt building) right off Monticello Ave, so it probably has the same view at your old place (Carter’s Mtn, Monticello…)

  5. You look fabulous Claire! And I love that suit!! Too cute. FYI, I am also sensitive/critical of thighs/booty but I also think women are tooooo critical of ourselves (I blame society, lol). I am glad the medicine is working but too bad you’re drowsy! 😦 Sending positive thoughts your way so you can get in a run on Thursday. 🙂

  6. I’m glad you’re feeling better!!

I love that swimsuit- SO cute! I can’t wait to see pics of your new place either!

  7. You look great in that suit, def. no worries about looking bad in areas! It’s a super cute suit!
I am loving one pieces too, especially the vintage ones. They are so classy, yet fun.

Too many gorgeous swimsuits here! I absolutely adore the Bettie Page Honeycomber, so tempted to buy despite not really needing a swimsuit right now!
