Afternoon Slump

As a teacher I used to get what I not so lovingly called “the slump” everyday…to the point where I needed to nap, which became a vicious cycle. I’ve since “cured” my afternoon slump by exercising most days at 4pm. This has trained my body to know that it’s not sleepy time, it’s time to get up and move!!!!!

Lately I’ve been getting the worst slump again between 2 and 4pm in the afternoon! Unfortunately I haven’t made it into the gym at my usual 4pm time and my body has gone right back to sleepy time mid-afternoon. I suppose it doesn’t help that I have also been writing the methodology section of my qualifying paper/dissertation proposal, which includes the ever-so-fun data analysis plan and justification of internal and external validity  (for the quant data) and credibility and confirmability (for the qual data) for the study.

As I worked throughout the morning and afternoon today I was getting more and more tired and hungry! Guess my lunch plan of peanut butter out of the jar just wasn’t cutting it (it’s all I have in my office!).

Just on a side note, a lot of people talk about natural peanut butter or full fat pb, but I’m ALL about the reduced fat JIF. Always have been, always will be. I don’t eat it so much because of the reduced fat nature (which doesn’t hurt), but rather because it just tastes better. More like peanuts or something. I think that’s because they put in more sugar to compensate for taking out some fat.

Anyways, back to my game plan to beat my hunger and lethargy. It’s beautiful outside today–mid 50s and sunny–so I took a walk across the street to the student union at the University (Newcomb Hall). Whenever I come here for food/drinks it always takes me back to college (except at Wisconsin, we had a full bar in our student union).

The cafeteria isn’t all that bad. We have a place for smoothies, burritos, sandwiches, pizza, and….Chick-Fil-A (my personal fave!).

Today I opted for a turkey and ham sandwich on wheat bread. As I waited in line though, I was eyeing the PB & J

I also got my favorite yogurt, the Dannon Light & Fit Lemon Chiffon. It’s by far my favorite flavor and for some reason I can never find it at the grocery store. Good ole’ Newcomb Hall cafeteria always has it though 🙂

Although it’s Diet Pepsi and not Diet Coke, I couldn’t resist. Geez, I need a 12-step program to wean me off the stuff! But overall, I think it (with the help of the food) has helped me feel a bit more awake. You know what that means? URgh, back to writing…
